Fractional CMO & Strategic Advisor

The1Collective – Marketing Platform

With a career that spans some of India’s most respected advertising agencies and a marketing leadership journey shaped across the Middle East, Shyam Sunder has built a reputation as a strategic brand thinker who seamlessly blends creativity with commercial impact. Rooted in art, storytelling, and strategic clarity, his work reflects a deep understanding of how brands grow—not just through ideas, but through insight, structure, and purpose.

Today, as Fractional CMO & Strategic Advisor at The1Collective, Shyam is redefining how businesses access world-class marketing talent. Built as an adaptive, asset-light marketing platform, The1Collective bridges the gap between exceptional global talent and businesses seeking value-driven, outcome-focused growth. His journey—from creative beginnings to strategic leadership—embodies a belief that meaningful business transformation starts with strong strategy and the right people.

The Beginning

We began the conversation by asking Shyam to reflect on his early life and the experiences that shaped his outlook.

Shyam shared that he was born into an illustrious family deeply gifted in art and music, where creativity was a way of life rather than a profession. From a young age, he discovered his aptitude for visual art, and when paired with strong English writing and speaking skills, it naturally led him into the world of advertising during his teenage years.

Driven by confidence, ambition, and an unyielding hunger to succeed, Shyam quite literally walked into one of India’s finest homegrown advertising agencies—Mudra Communications. While creativity formed the foundation of his career, it was his formal education and experience in Brand Management that sharpened his strategic lens and ultimately paved the way for his transition into a marketing leadership role in Dubai.

Early Career and Defining Experiences

Curious to understand the experiences that shaped his professional foundation, we asked Shyam about the early milestones of his career.

He reflected on his formative years at Mudra Communications and Fountainhead Communications, where he worked on iconic brands such as Kerala Tourism, Apple, Henkel, and Citibank. Collaborating with exceptional talent across strategy and creative disciplines gave him a strong grounding in the fundamentals of Strategic Brand Management.

His postgraduate qualification in Marketing Management further strengthened this foundation. Since relocating to Dubai, Shyam has led brand-building and growth initiatives for both homegrown and global businesses, delivering path-breaking campaigns and award-winning work across retail, real estate, hospitality, and travel.

The Idea Behind The1Collective

We then asked what inspired him to create The1Collective and what gap he identified in the market.

Shyam explained that his experience across large multinational networks, boutique agencies, and freelance ecosystems revealed a consistent challenge—access to high-quality talent at a reasonable cost. Exceptional strategic and creative talent often remains concentrated within large agency networks, making them inaccessible to startups and smaller businesses. At the same time, even large organizations face pressure as marketing budgets tighten.

This price-value imbalance became the catalyst for The1Collective—an asset-light, adaptive marketing platform that provides businesses in the region with access to world-class global talent, delivering flexibility, efficiency, and measurable value.

Building the Platform

Every platform faces its own set of challenges, and we asked Shyam about the early realities of building The1Collective.

He described the platform as operating on a flywheel model, where demand and supply continuously fuel each other’s growth. The primary challenge—and opportunity—has been curating exceptional talent.

Today, The1Collective brings together over 25 top-tier, on-demand professionals from around the world, spanning branding, creative and content, social media, performance marketing, PR, and corporate communications. Strengthening this talent ecosystem remains central to the platform’s evolution.

Leadership, Strategy, and Scale

As responsibilities expanded, we were keen to understand how Shyam’s leadership philosophy evolved.

He emphasized that strategy remains the cornerstone of any marketing and communications business. Ownership and accountability, he believes, must lie with experienced leaders who manage client relationships and guide long-term brand growth.

These leaders continuously evolve through learning and upskilling to remain relevant in a rapidly changing industry. Shyam sees his role as adding value to both sides of the flywheel—ensuring sustainable growth of clients on the demand side while bringing good talent with high standards of creativity and execution on the supply side.

The Role of a Modern Marketing Platform

Discussing the evolving role of marketing platforms today, Shyam described The1Collective as adaptive and fluid—designed to fit the unique needs of each business.

The team is sector-agnostic, equipped to deeply understand different industries, identify challenges, and uncover opportunities. This problem-solving mindset, combined with the ability to match the right talent to the right business, is what drives meaningful transformation.

Operating on a human-first, AI-assisted model, The1Collective uses technology to enhance insight, efficiency, and impact—without replacing human creativity and judgment.

Defining Success and Advice for the Next Generation

Reflecting on success, Shyam defines it as the impact and change one brings to a business. For him, success is entirely outcome-driven—and most fulfilling when achieved through innovation and powerful ideas.

To aspiring marketers and creatives, his message is clear: your brand is everything. It is the only true asset of lasting value in any business. Nurture it, protect it, and grow it with passion and discipline.

He stresses that all marketing begins with strategy—rooted in a deep understanding of the customer, product, competition, and pricing. From this foundation come insight, ideas, creativity, content, and ultimately execution and optimization.

Above all, Shyam encourages the courage to experiment and the willingness to fail. Because that, he believes, is where real learning begins—and where businesses truly grow.
