Why Northeast Syria Is on High Alert Before Key Agreement Takes Effect
QAMISHLI, Syria — Security tensions are rising across northeast Syria as Kurdish-led authorities prepare to implement a landmark agreement with Damascus, prompting curfews and heightened alert measures ahead of its rollout.
On Sunday, Kurdish security forces announced that curfews would be imposed next week in two major northeastern cities — Hasakah and Qamishli — as part of precautionary steps before a new political and security arrangement with Syria’s Islamist-led central government comes into force.
The agreement, finalized on Friday, outlines a gradual process to integrate Kurdish military and civilian institutions into the Syrian state framework. The deal follows recent territorial withdrawals by Kurdish forces amid advances by government troops in parts of the region.
Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, said the agreement would begin implementation on the ground on Monday. Under the terms, both sides will pull back forces from frontline positions across northeastern Syria, including the strategic northern town of Kobani.
Abdi emphasized that the arrangement includes the deployment of a “limited internal security force” in select areas of Hasakah and Qamishli, while explicitly ruling out the entry of regular military units into Kurdish-majority cities and towns.
Kurdish security officials said curfews will be enforced in Hasakah from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, followed by similar restrictions in Qamishli from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The measures are intended to facilitate troop withdrawals, manage public order, and prevent potential unrest during the sensitive transition period.
The agreement represents one of the most significant political shifts in northeast Syria since the start of the conflict, raising questions about the future autonomy of Kurdish regions and the balance of power between local forces and Damascus.
Observers say the coming days will be critical in determining whether the arrangement can be implemented smoothly or whether longstanding mistrust and security risks could undermine the fragile process.
