Labour Hit by Resignation as Ex-Diplomat Cites Epstein Report Fallout

LONDON — Britain’s Labour Party has been shaken by the resignation of former diplomat Peter Mandelson, who stepped down on Sunday citing the risk of “further embarrassment” following renewed scrutiny over his past links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Mandelson, 72, a former British ambassador to Washington, announced his departure after newly released US Justice Department records drew attention to alleged financial transactions between him and Epstein in the early 2000s. The documents, published on Friday and reported widely in British media, reportedly show that Epstein made three payments of $75,000 each to bank accounts linked to Mandelson between 2003 and 2004.

In a letter addressed to Labour’s general secretary Hollie Ridley, Mandelson said he was stepping aside to prevent further damage to the party while he examined the allegations.

“I need to look into allegations that I believe are false,” Mandelson wrote, adding that he had “no record or memory” of receiving financial payments from Epstein more than two decades ago.

Mandelson was dismissed from his post as Britain’s ambassador to the United States last year after questions emerged regarding his association with Epstein. On Sunday, he told the BBC that he did not recall the transfers and said he could not confirm whether the newly released documents were authentic.

The US Department of Justice released the records as part of a broader disclosure related to Epstein’s financial dealings, reigniting political and public scrutiny of figures previously linked to the late financier.

Labour officials have not commented in detail on Mandelson’s resignation, though the development comes at a sensitive moment for the party as it seeks to maintain discipline and credibility amid heightened public attention.

The case underscores the lingering political fallout surrounding Epstein’s network and the renewed reputational risks posed by archival disclosures, even decades after the alleged events occurred.
