ALGIERS — American livestreamer IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Jason Watkins Jr., saw his month-long Africa tour take an unexpected turn after a tense incident in Algeria went viral across social media platforms.

The incident occurred on Saturday during Speed’s stop in Algeria, where clips from his livestream rapidly circulated online showing an altercation with football fans at a local stadium. The viral moment contrasted sharply with the largely positive reception Speed has received across the continent during his ongoing tour.

With more than 30 million subscribers on YouTube, Speed announced a 28-day Africa tour spanning nearly 20 countries, including South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Morocco. For nearly three weeks, his journey unfolded smoothly, with Speed livestreaming everyday life, local food, and cultural experiences, often drawing massive crowds.

Many viewers praised the creator for highlighting African countries in a positive light, pushing back against stereotypes and misrepresentations often seen in global media.

One of the most widely shared moments of the tour came in Egypt, where Speed explored Cairo wearing a traditional galabiya and livestreamed from the Pyramids of Giza — a broadcast he said was the first livestream ever conducted from the historic site.

However, events in Algeria took a dramatic turn. While the livestream initially showed Speed dancing, sampling local food, and interacting with residents, the atmosphere shifted when he attended a football match at Nelson Mandela Stadium.

Upon arriving at the stadium for a match between MC Alger and USM Alger, Speed was met with water bottles and other objects being thrown from the stands. During the livestream, he appeared visibly confused by the crowd’s reaction before quickly exiting the venue and ending the stream without further explanation.

The footage sparked widespread debate online, with fans expressing concern over the incident while others speculated about the cause of the crowd’s response. Despite the setback, Speed has not indicated any change to his remaining tour schedule.

The episode underscores both the massive reach of livestream culture and the unpredictability that can accompany high-profile digital creators navigating global audiences in real time.
